We confirm the exact delivery time for a snowmobile from Canada to Almaty or Bishkek when we book it: it depends on the route and on the schedules for specific dates. What we can tell you in advance is which stages make up that time. And in November the key question is not shipping speed, but whether the trim you want is in stock at a Canadian dealer right now. We are receiving many requests for the Skandic, Expedition and Summit for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, so here is everything in one place to help you make it for this winter.

What the timeline is made of

  1. Reserving a specific unit. You pay a CAD 2,000 deposit, we show you the documents for a specific snowmobile and reserve it with the dealer. If you walk away from the chosen unit, the deposit is non-refundable, so we agree on the model, engine, track and colour before reserving.
  2. Dealer preparation — 3–5 days. During this time you pay the balance.
  3. Pickup and dispatch on the same day. We collect the snowmobile from the dealer, shoot photos and video for you, and hand it over for shipping that same day.
  4. Canada and the ocean. Snowmobiles travel only in containers, usually consolidated with other vehicles. The sea leg alone normally takes three to six weeks, depending on the port, transshipment and season. More in our article on container shipping.
  5. Overland to Central Asia. Neither Kazakhstan nor Kyrgyzstan has ocean access, so the route is always multimodal: through Georgia, Azerbaijan and a ferry across the Caspian, or through Chinese ports and rail — via Khorgos or Dostyk for Almaty, via Irkeshtam or Torugart for Kyrgyzstan. We cover how this works in our articles on Almaty and Bishkek.
  6. Customs and certification. A snowmobile is classified under EAEU code 8703 10 110 0 with a 5% duty, the same for new and used. On top of that come the importing country's VAT and a certificate of conformity under TR CU 010/2011, without which the machine cannot be registered. Rates and documents are in our guides Ski-Doo to Kazakhstan and Ski-Doo to Kyrgyzstan.
  7. Registration. In Kazakhstan a snowmobile is registered as a self-propelled machine at the akimat's registration office, not at a police service centre. In Kyrgyzstan we confirm the registration procedure for each machine before it ships.

We confirm the total "from booking to snow" time for each specific shipment and do not quote average figures: ship, ferry and train schedules on both routes change. But the list already shows the main point: most stages take weeks, not days. That is why ordering in November and ordering in February means two different winters.

When there is snow in the mountains

The snowmobile season depends on altitude and on the particular winter, and there are no unified statistics for snowmobile routes. So we rely on open data from mountain resorts and tour operators:

  • Trans-Ili Alatau (Almaty). Shymbulak resort opened its season on 17 November 2019, and in 2025 the official opening was 6 December. In spring the snow lasts: in 2017 the season was extended to 3 May because fresh snow was still lying in the mountains. Keep in mind that the resort partly relies on artificial snow, while a snowmobile needs natural powder, and how much of it builds up depends on the winter.
  • East Kazakhstan (Ridder). According to the local project Skitouring.kz, the first snowfalls come as early as October, multi-day tours start in mid-November and the freeride season ends in late March. By the end of winter the snowpack exceeds 3 metres, and besides ski touring, snowmobile rides are popular in the area.
  • Karakol (Kyrgyzstan). In the 2023/24 season the Karakol ski base operated from mid-November to early April.
  • Suusamyr. Heli-ski operator Ak-Sai Travel names December to April as the good-snow period at 3,800–4,200 metres.

Based on these data, the mountain season in both regions runs roughly until late March or April. The earlier your snowmobile leaves Canada, the more of this winter you get to ride. If you buy late in the season, part of it inevitably goes to transit and paperwork.

Why dealer stock decides everything in November

BRP runs a spring pre-order programme called Spring Check. For the 2027 model year it invited buyers to order a Ski-Doo by 31 March 2026 for guaranteed delivery. One important rule of the programme: models with X or X-RS in their name can be ordered only during this spring window, and after it they cannot be ordered through a dealer. In our catalogue this includes, for example, the Summit X, MXZ X, Backcountry X and Renegade X.

What this means in practice:

  • In November, spring-only trims can only be bought from what dealers already have: units the dealer ordered for its own stock, or pre-orders that fell through.
  • For other models, including the Skandic and Expedition, we check availability and ordering options with dealers for your request rather than promising them in advance.
  • If no dealer has your exact combination of engine, track and colour, it is wiser to consider a neighbouring trim right away than to wait: by the logic of the programme, the next spring pre-order will already be for a new model year.

Which model for which job

  • Work, sleds, firewood, ice. Skandic: a wide 20 or 24″ track, and on the LE a gearbox with low range and towing up to 680 kg with the reinforced bumper. See the Skandic LE and Skandic SE.
  • Work plus long two-up trips. Expedition: a two-seat saddle and engines up to the 180 hp 900 ACE Turbo R — the Expedition LE and Expedition SE.
  • Mountains and deep snow. Summit on the REV Gen5 platform with a 154–165″ track: besides the Summit X, there are the Summit Expert and Summit Edge. For riding high in the mountains we discuss turbo engines, since a naturally aspirated engine loses power at altitude.
  • Forest and narrow cutlines, riding solo. Tundra is the lightest and narrowest sled in the utility range.

Detailed comparisons are in Skandic, Expedition or Tundra and Summit X or Freeride, and every model is in our snowmobile catalogue.

What to prepare while the snowmobile is in transit

  • Whose name it goes in. An individual or a company — this determines how customs payments are made. Decide before booking so the unit's documents are issued correctly from the start.
  • Registration. In Kazakhstan, check the document list in advance with the akimat registration office in your region. Under the Registration Rules these are the customs declaration, the self-propelled machine passport (in practice electronic), the certificate of conformity and a document confirming the manufacturer's (importer's) extended obligations. Ask there as well which licence the owner needs to operate a snowmobile. In Kyrgyzstan we settle this question before shipping.
  • Storage and transport. Think about where the snowmobile will stay between rides and how you will get it to the riding area: city dwellers almost always need a trailer.
  • Mountain safety. In the Trans-Ili Alatau, the Altai and the Tian Shan, off-piste riding carries avalanche risk. Get avalanche gear and basic training before your first ride, not after.

How we work

We buy snowmobiles only from authorised Canadian dealers: new units, and used ones only if they are clean and only at your request. We do not publish prices: for a specific model and city we calculate the full estimate — duty, VAT, certification and delivery — and our partners handle turnkey delivery to your city. Tell us the model and the city, and we will check dealer stock and confirm the route and timing for the next shipment. You can send a request via the order form or the contacts page.

Full transparency. Throughout the whole journey you receive every document related to your order. For a new vehicle, that starts with the official dealer's bill of sale; for a used one, we help you run its VIN history; after that, documents at every stage of shipping.
