Kyrgyzstan is one of the most mountainous countries we ship to from our Canadian warehouses in Toronto and Montreal. For a snowmobile that is the starting point: the terrain decides which platform and track length will work and which sled will spend the season in the garage. Below: how to choose a Ski-Doo for local conditions, what charges apply on import in 2026 and which documents are needed for the sled to go out on the snow legally.

A country where almost everything is above a thousand metres

According to the UNDP climate adaptation programme, about 93% of Kyrgyzstan lies above 1,000 metres, with an average elevation of about 2,630 metres (UNDP). The Library of Congress country study gives an average elevation of 2,750 metres and puts the Tian Shan and Pamir at roughly 65% of the country (Country Studies). The figures differ because of methodology, but the conclusion is the same: there are few long flat trails and a lot of riding on slopes and in valleys.

That leads to a practical rule. A sled bought in Canada for groomed trails between towns is often out of place in the Kyrgyz mountains: a short track and sport suspension work on packed snow, while in deep powder the machine starts to sink. So with a client from Kyrgyzstan we start not with horsepower but with the question of where and how they plan to ride.

Which Ski-Doo models from our stock suit the mountains

Mountain: Summit and Freeride

The Ski-Doo Summit line is built on the REV Gen5 platform with a 154–165″ track and Rotax 850 E-TEC or 600R engines depending on trim. Adrenaline, Edge, Expert, HCE and X trims are in stock or in transit. The Ski-Doo Freeride is for experienced riders: a Rotax 850 E-TEC Turbo R with up to 180 hp and a 146–165″ track. For riding high in the mountains we discuss turbocharged versions separately: a naturally aspirated engine delivers less at altitude, and you feel it climbing through loose snow.

Crossovers: Backcountry and Renegade

If part of the route is on packed track and part is in untracked snow, a crossover makes sense. The Backcountry has a 146″ track; the Renegade has a 137″ track and a Rotax 850 E-TEC Turbo R or 900 ACE depending on trim.

Utility: Skandic, Tundra, Expedition

For work — hauling cargo, reaching a remote site, towing a sled — utility models fit. The Ski-Doo Skandic with a wide 20″ track and four-stroke Rotax 900 ACE Turbo R or 600, the Tundra with a 154″ track and the economical Rotax 600 EFI, and the Expedition with a 154″ track. There is also the Expedition Electric with a Rotax E-Power motor.

A first snowmobile

The Summit NEO and MXZ NEO with the four-stroke Rotax 600 EFI are designed for beginners; the MXZ 200 with a Rotax 120 is a youth model. The full list with warehouse availability is in the snowmobile catalogue, and a platform comparison is in the guide why Ski-Doo snowmobiles are worth buying in Canada.

Import charges: one rate for new and used

A snowmobile with a piston internal combustion engine is classified under EAEU CN code 8703 10 110 0, "vehicles specially designed for travelling on snow". The duty is 5% of customs value. This code does not split new and used machines and is not tied to engine displacement, so a 2027 model-year sled and a used one are charged at the same rate. The electric Expedition Electric falls under the neighbouring code 8703 10 180 0 "other", also at 5%.

In April 2025 the Customs Service of Kyrgyzstan confirmed both the 0.40% fee and 12% VAT (Economist.kg, 2025). On the recycling fee: the waste law provides for a fee on oils, batteries, tyres, electronics, filters and packaging, and in August 2024 the Ministry of Natural Resources stated that no such fee was provided for cars. We found no fee on vehicle imports in force for 2026, but we re-check this item on the clearance date of every vehicle.

If a private individual imports the sled

The "single rate" of 48–54% or euros per cubic centimetre that applies to passenger cars does not cover snowmobiles. EEC Council Decision No. 107 places snowmobiles among goods for personal use on which an aggregate customs payment is levied (Decision No. 107). In essence it is the same 5% duty and national VAT, paid as one payment. For a snowmobile this works in the buyer's favour: the base rate is low to begin with.

Certification and registration

Snowmobiles are on the list of products subject to mandatory certification under technical regulation TR CU 010/2011 "On the safety of machinery and equipment": the annex names "swamp vehicles, snowmobiles and trailers for them", and the supporting standards include GOST R 50944-2011 "Snowmobiles" (TR CU 010/2011). We prepare the certificate together with the customs package. The requirement for an emergency call device does not apply to snowmobiles: in TR CU 018/2011 it covers only categories M and N.

Registration is less clear-cut. The 2018 amendments to Kyrgyzstan's road traffic law introduced mandatory registration of motorcycles, tricycles, quad bikes and "motonarty" (motor sledges) (24.kg, 2018). Whether that term covers a modern snowmobile, and which authority keeps the register, could not be confirmed from the primary source. So we settle this question for each vehicle before shipment, not after it arrives.

EAEU rules in one paragraph

Kyrgyzstan is an EAEU member: duty is calculated under the union's Common Customs Tariff, and once released for free circulation the snowmobile acquires the status of EAEU goods. VAT and fees remain national. The structure of charges and the paperwork are covered in detail in the article on clearing a car from Canada in Kyrgyzstan.

The route: ocean plus land

Kyrgyzstan is landlocked, so delivery from Canada is always multimodal. We consider two options. The first runs through Georgian ports and the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor): Georgia — Azerbaijan — Caspian Sea — Kazakhstan (Middle Corridor). The second runs through Chinese ports and by rail to the Irkeshtam or Torugart border crossings. We confirm the routing, transit time and service availability when booking a specific shipment; we do not quote averaged transit times without confirmation.

Why Canada, and what we calculate up front

We buy only on the Canadian market: new snowmobiles from dealers or clean used ones, with no auctions and no machines rebuilt after accidents. For a used sled we check the history by serial number — how this works is described in the article on VIN and history checks.

There are no prices in this article on purpose: the cost of a trim depends on the warehouse and model year. We calculate the full estimate — duty, VAT, fee, certification and shipping — for the specific sled before purchase. Send a request with the model and the area where you will ride, and we will suggest suitable options.

Rates are current as of October 2026 and may change. The final calculation is made on the date of clearance.
